About Us
  • The Dickinson Iron Community Services Agency:
    • Has been in business since 1978.
    • Has a yearly budget of around $4 million in state, federal, and local funds to devote to the community.

Goal
  • As a Community Action Agency, DICSA’s goal is to use all available resources to help individuals attain:
    • Self-sufficiency.
    • Improved quality of life.

Senior Centers
  • DICSA operates 11 senior centers in Dickinson, Iron, and Baraga counties.
  • Services offered:
    • Congregate Meals
    • Home Delivered Meals
    • A wide variety of activities:
      • Card Games
      • Dances
      • Quilting
      • Fundraisers
      •    Each senior center has a different schedule of events.

Family Ties Adult Center
  • A safe and stimulating environment for individuals with Alzheimer's Disease or other debilitating diseases.
  • A daily routine filled with activities and socialization that give a feeling of accomplishment.
  • The caregiver can perform daily responsibilities while their loved one is cared for.
  • An alternative to placing the loved one in a long-term care facility.

Housing Programs
  • Provides housing programs and services to assist individuals and families in Dickinson and Iron Counties:
    • Home Weatherization
    • Housing Rehabilitation with the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)
    • Home Purchase Rehabilitation with Down Payment Assistance (HPR)
    • Property Improvement Program (PIP)

Home Weatherization
  • Assists income eligible households (renters and homeowners) in reducing heating costs.
  • An energy audit determines the type of weatherization services needed and any safety issues to be addressed.
  • The household makes a commitment to reduce their energy consumption.
  • Services provided may include:
    • Attic and wall insulation
    • Caulking
    • Glass replacement
    • Weather stripping

Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)
  • Services to bring eligible households in Dickinson and Iron counties up to MSHDA Housing Quality Standards.
  • Repairs may include:
    • Furnaces
    • Roofs
    • Plumbing
    • Electrical
    • Structural
    • Energy
  • Requires a lien on the property or a monthly repayment agreement.

Home Purchase Rehabilitation (HPR)
  • Helps eligible households with down payment and closing costs related to the purchase of a home.
  • Makes funds available for moderate rehabilitation to the home.
  • Individuals must complete a home ownership counseling class provided by the MSU extension office.

Property Improvement Program (PIP)
  • Allows homeowners to obtain a low cost loan from MSHDA to make improvements on their home.
  • The interest rate is determined by annual household income.
  • Homeowners can borrow up to $25,000 for 20 years.

In-Home Services
  • Services to help senior citizens over age 60:
    • maintain independence
    • remain a vital part of our community.
  • Provided on a donation basis.
  • Services include:
    • Homemaking
    • Home Care Assistance
    • Home Injury Control
    • Respite Care
    • Caregiver Respite Program
    • National Family Caregiver Support Program

Homemaking
  • Performance of household tasks to maintain an adequate living environment:
    • Laundry
    • Meal Preparation
    • Shopping for necessities
    • Light Housekeeping Tasks (vacuuming, cleaning, making beds, etc.)

Home Care Assistance
  • Assistance with daily living activities and routine household tasks:
    • Bathing
    • Dressing
    • Toileting
    • Eating
    • Ambulation
    • Allowable homemaking tasks

Home Injury Control
  • Adaptations to the home to prevent or minimize the occurrence of injuries.
  • Does not include home repair, chore or homemaker activities.
  • Allowable tasks include installation or maintenance of:
    • Enhanced lighting
    • Bathroom chairs and grab bars
    • Non-slip treatments
    • Vision or hearing adaptive devices
    • Stairway and/or hallway handrails
    • Smoke and/or gas alarms

Respite Care
  • Assistance for persons with mental or physical disabilities and frail elder persons.
  • Allows the caregiver to complete daily tasks while their loved one is cared for.
  • Provides:
    • Companionship
    • Supervision

Caregiver Respite Program
  • Available to Dickinson and Iron County residents 18 and older.
  • The same services as Respite Care, however care may be provided at the Family Ties Adult Center or in the home.
  • Mandatory cost-sharing program. The contribution is dependent upon household income and expenses.

National Family Caregiver Support Program
  • Targets Dickinson and Iron County residents who are:
    •  over 60 and being cared for by someone under 60.
    • grandparents over the age of 60 that are legally responsible for grandchildren under 18.
  • The same service as Respite Care, however care may be provided at the Family Ties Adult Center or in the home.
  • Volunteer cost-sharing program. The contribution is dependent upon household income and expenses.

Nutrition
  • Balanced meals for:
    • Seniors
    • Eligible families with a child five or younger, not on WIC.
  • Services include:
    • CSFP
    • Congregate Meals
    • Home Delivered Meals
    • TEFAP

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)
  • Provides a monthly supplemental food package to:
    • Low-income people 60 years of age and older.
    • Eligible families with a child five years of age or younger, not on WIC.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)
  • CSFP is distributed monthly at sites in Norway, Sagola, Felch, Crystal Falls, and Iron River.

Congregate Meals
  • Provides noon or evening meals to senior citizens in a congregate setting.
  • Helps seniors both financially and physically by providing:
    • Nutrition education
    • Nutritious meals
  • The senior centers are also gathering places for socialization and obtaining other services available for seniors.

Home Delivered Meals
  • Delivers meals to homebound seniors up to six days a week.
  • There is no charge, however donations are encouraged.
  • An assessment must be completed to determine eligibility.

TEFAP
  • Food for eligible low-income households.
  • Purchased by the United States Department of Agriculture
  • Distributed two to four times per year at local senior centers.
  • Food items vary based on product availability.
  • Products include:
    • Beans
    • Rice
    • canned meats
    • Vegetables
    • Fruits
    • Flour.

Outreach Services
  • Services and referrals for low-income families and those who need assistance:
    • Mothers Infants and Children (MIC)
    • Emergency Services
    • Art Camp

Mothers Infants and Children (MIC)
  • For pregnant mothers or those with a child 5 years or younger not receiving WIC.
  • Provides the same supplemental food package as CSFP plus extra juice and milk.

Emergency Services
  • Assistance with emergency needs for seniors and low-income families.
  • Services may include:
    • Furnace repair
    • Roof repairs
    • Payment of an energy bill or partial rent assistance.

Art Camp
  • Kids 8-15 participate in a week long summer class that teaches basic principles of art.
  • Artwork is framed and ready for display at the end of class.

Transportation to Employment Action (TEAM) Transport of Michigan
  • TEAM Transport is a Project Zero initiative to encourage and support employment by providing transportation in Dickinson and Iron Counties.
  • The goal of Project Zero is to reduce the number of families without earned income to zero.
  • Services of TEAM include:
    • Transportation to and from the job search
    • Employment
    • Daycare
    • Any other destinations needed to overcome the barriers to attaining or maintaining employment.

Transportation
  • Provides door to door transportation for seniors 60 and older in Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Norway, Iron River, Crystal Falls and Sagola.
  • Rides may be arranged for:
    • Appointments
    • Shopping
    • Dinner at a local Senior Center
  • There is a minimal mandatory fee per ride that is fixed by the state.

Volunteer Services
  • Mission:
    • To engage all ages in volunteer service.
    • To meet critical community needs.
    • To provide high quality experiences to enrich volunteers' lives.

    • Volunteer Center
    • RSVP

Volunteer Center
  • Works with over 50 volunteer stations to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities.
  • Helps Dickinson and Iron County residents of all ages find out where their help is needed.

RSVP
  • Enrolls volunteers 55 and older.
  • Volunteers receive:
    • Supplemental liability insurance
    • Meals if volunteering over a meal period
    • Assistance with transportation and/or mileage reimbursement.
    • Special volunteer recognition events throughout the year.
