Senior Centers
  • DICSA operates 11 senior centers in Dickinson, Iron, and Baraga counties.
  • Services offered:
    • Congregate Meals
    • Home Delivered Meals
    • A wide variety of activities:
      • Card Games
      • Dances
      • Quilting
      • Fundraisers
      •    Each senior center has a different schedule of events.

In-Home Services
  • Available to residents of Dickinson and Iron Counties over age 60.
  • Support seniors in:
    • Maintaining their independence
    • Continuing to be a vital part of our community.
  • An assessment to determine the needs of the household is done by DICSA staff.
  • Provided on a donation basis.

Homemaking
  • Performance of household tasks to maintain an adequate living environment for older individuals with functional limitations.
  • Does not include chore or personal care tasks.
  • Tasks are limited to the following:
    • Laundry
    • Ironing
    • Meal Preparation
    • Shopping for necessities including groceries
    • Light Housekeeping Tasks (dusting, vacuuming, mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms and kitchens, making beds, maintaining a safe environment)

Home Care Assistance
  • In-home assistance to maintain an adequate living environment for older persons with functional limitations.
  • Does not include skilled nursing services.
  • Provides help with daily living activities and routine household tasks including:
    • Bathing
    • Dressing
    • Toileting
    • Transferring
    • Ambulation
    • Laundry
    • Meal Preparation
    • Shopping for necessities, including groceries
    • Light Housekeeping Tasks

Respite Care
  • Available to persons with mental or physical disabilities and frail elder persons in the absence of the primary caregiver(s).
  • Provides:
    • Companionship
    • Supervision
    • Assistance with activities of daily living

Caregiver Respite Program
  • Available to residents 18 years of age or older and caring for someone over age 60.
  • Provides the same services as Respite Care, however care may be provided at the Family Ties Adult Center or in the home.
  • An assessment must be done to determine the specific needs of the household.
  • A mandatory cost-sharing program. The amount to be contributed by the participant is dependent upon household income and expenses.

Home Injury Control
  • Adaptations to the home in order to prevent or minimize injuries.
  • Doesn’t include structural repair or homemaker activities.
  • Tasks include installation or maintenance of:
    • Enhanced lighting
    • Bathroom chairs and grab bars
    • Non-slip treatments
    • Vision or hearing adaptive devices
    • Stairway and/or hallway handrails
    • Smoke and/or gas alarms

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)
  • Provides a supplemental food package each month to low-income senior citizens over age 60.
  • Types of food provided:
    • Canned juices
    • Canned fruits
    • Canned vegetables
    • Canned meats
    • powdered milk
    • Cheese
    • Cereals
    • Rice
    • Peanut butter

National Family Caregiver Support Program
  • Targets residents of Dickinson and Iron Counties who:
    • Are over age 60 and being cared for by someone under 60 such as a child or other family member.
    • Are grandparents over the age of 60 that are legally responsible for grandchildren under the age of 18.
  • Provides the same service as Respite Care, however care may be provided at the Family Ties Adult Center or in the home.
  • An assessment must be done to determine the specific needs of the household.
  • This a volunteer cost-sharing program.

Family Ties Adult Center
  • A safe and stimulating environment for those with Alzheimer's Disease or other debilitating diseases.
  • Provides a daily routine filled with activities and socialization that provide a feeling of accomplishment.
  • Caregiver can perform daily tasks while their loved one is cared for.
  • An alternative to placing the loved one in a long-term care facility.
  • Services include:
    • Caregiver Training
    • Transportation
    • Hot Noon Meal
    • Crisis Intervention
    • Regular Exercise

Congregate Meals
  • Provides noon meals (evening meals at certain senior centers) to senior citizens in a congregate setting.
  • Helps seniors both financially and physically by providing nutrition education and nutritious meals.
  • Centers are also gathering places for socialization and obtaining other services available for seniors.

Home Delivered Meals
  • Delivers meals to homebound seniors up to six days a week.
  • There is no charge, however donations from participants are encouraged.
  • Arranged through the local senior center.
  • An assessment must be completed to determine eligibility.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)
  • Seeks to engage adults 55 and older in volunteer service to meet community needs and to enrich volunteers' lives.
  • Matches volunteers to agencies according to their skills, interests, and available time.
  • Flexible and adaptable to suit each volunteer and station.
  • Numerous stations to choose from.

RSVP
  • RSVP Volunteers:
    • Volunteer a few hours a month
    • Make their own schedule
    • Choose how they want to serve
    • Work with others to solve community needs
  • RSVP Benefits:
    • Opportunity to use skills and experience
    • Supplemental accident and liability insurance
    • Meals, transportation, and transportation reimbursement
    • Satisfaction of knowing that they made a difference
    • Social get-togethers with other RSVP volunteers

Transportation
  • Door to door transportation for seniors 60 and older in Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Norway, Iron River, Crystal Falls and Sagola.
  • Vans are wheelchair accessible.
  • Rides available for appointments, shopping, dinner at your local Senior Center, etc.
  • Minimal mandatory fee per ride that is fixed by the state.
  • Rides can be arranged through the local senior center one day in advance.
