Residents of all ages from Dickinson and Iron Counties can find out where their help is needed in their community through the Volunteer Center. This includes upcoming events and on-going services needs. The Volunteer Center works with over 50 volunteer stations to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities.
The Michigan Student Service Award Program gives local and state-wide recognition to high school aged youth who volunteer a significant number of hours during their high school career. Students record their volunteer hours and in turn can earn an engraved medallion and certificate from the Governor presented at their award ceremonies. Photos and press releases about the students' accomplishments are published in the local newspapers. To enroll in the program or for more information, contact Mark Rose at (906)774-2256, ext. 32 or by e-mail at dicsahousing@charterinternet.com.
The Volunteer Center and the Dickinson & Iron County Probation Offices have teamed up to create a program for Minors in Possession (MIP) where community service is regarded as a positive learning experience. Volunteers use their skills and interests to benefit their future aspirations. Past projects have included building benches and picnic tables and making blanket and pillow sets.
